# I CAN’T BREATHE: BLACK LIVES MATTER

It has been an interesting last few days in the world of people of color and all those who care about equality. I am sure we are all fully aware of what’s happening in America with the protests and riots that are taking place in many states because of angry citizens who are furious over the death of George Floyd an African American man in Minneapolis ,who was arrested and murdered by a white a police officer who put his knee on his neck. for about 8 minutes in broad daylight. George kept screaming ‘I can’t breathe’ until he stopped moving. Nothing happened to officer even though he did this in broad daylight. People started protesting and still are, some might say racism is getting worse but as will smith said “it’s not getting worse, it’s getting filmed”.

What’s making people so angry is how the conversation went from being about an innocent man being killed in broad daylight by a police officer to now being about black people being called ‘Thugs’ and being arrested for simply protesting. Some people are asking why black people are always talking about racism? Why do they always do this? Why are they so dramatic? Some of the people seem to be worried more about when Target or Walmart is going to open again. These shops are closed because of the breaking in and robbing that happened during protests. It is sad that they are worried about that and not about lives of innocent black human beings. Funny how one bad protester labels the whole movement, but a few bad cops are never supposed to represent all cops.

It’s been 500 years and we are still fighting for our rights; we shouldn’t have to live in fear when we wake up because we are not white. One day you might just be walking, and a cop might try to stop you or instead he can just decide to shoot you and get away with it! Even with evidence on video. but George Floyd was killed and we got video evidence with his face in it! Eric Garner, Jamar Clark, Trayvon martin, Brian day, Lorenzo Hayes, but the cop is the victim? How is this possible?

All lives cannot matter until black lives matter and if you think racism doesn’t exist you need to have a long difficult conversation with yourself and ask why you are uncomfortable discussing this issue. We all bleed the same. Our skin is not a weapon. The fact that we have to justify that any lives matter really shows us a lot about humanity.

I’m going to let my heart bleed; it was my brothers, but I feel like you hurt me. I’m hoping one day I wake up like it’s a bad dream. Self-defense? No, they are murderers if you ask me.

“No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite” – Nelson Mandela
