My SBC Headington learning experience

In August 2019 I received a partial scholarship to attend a summer course at a prestigious school in the UK, Headington Oxford School. At that school I took part in a Global Young Leadership course and I learnt traits of a good and bad leader. A good leader has charisma, social skills, creativity and is selfless unlike a bad leader who is controlling, has lack of respect, is impatient and disrespectful. In my leadership course our teacher taught us to be a good public speaker, he helped us build confidence, keeping eye contact with the audience, speak clearly and use good vocab. We also looked at famous politicians e.g. Donald Trump and Jose Mujica and what type of leader they were and with that information we made 5 posters on qualities of a leader:

- Challenge the process - is about finding and implementing new and better ways of doing things in order to constantly improve and grow

- Inspire a shared vision- is about leaders who inspire a shared vision passionately believe that they can make a difference. It is the practise that sets leaders apart from credible people.

- Encourage the heart- to keep hope and determination alive, leaders recognize contributions that individuals make.

- Model the way- to create standards of excellence and then set an example for others to follow

- Enable others to act- to strengthen others, making each person feel capable and powerful

We made a survey to ask the school if they would rather have a world of only female leaders or male leaders and everyone had interesting answers but at the end of the day it was a tie .We also did small surveys in our class to find out what type of negotiator we were, and it turns out I am a hard nose negotiator and I am also an intuitive decision maker. This course expanded my knowledge about leaders and improved my public speaking. I learnt how to think outside of the box and work as a team. It helped me to look at life from a different perspective because my classmates were from all over the world and they all had different sides to what leadership meant for them.
